Prior to Edelman's injury, the Patriots were arguably as loaded as ever, or at least since 2007, when the arrivals of Randy Moss and Wes Welker helped Tom Brady throw 50 touchdowns to 8 INTs and earn his first MVP award following a perfect regular season. We'll explain in a moment how their enviable depth, and elite coaching, can help the Patriots weather Edelman's potential loss. First, a reminder of what they'd be losing. Edelman is one of Brady's closest friends off the field and has been on the receiving end of more Brady throws than any Patriot besides Welker. New England's leading receiver in three of the past four seasons, he's coming off a personal-best 1,106 receiving yards on 98 grabs, the second-highest total of his career. He's also the team's leading punt returner and, after Rob Gronkowski, New England's toughest individual matchup in the passing game. Edelman often saves his best for January and February. You probably recognize the picture above, his impossible 23-yard late fourth-quarter catch — as huge as any play in the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history. What you may not have known is Edelman has been the most targeted player, and has the most catches, in the past three postseasons, including two Patriots Super Bowls.
