ON HEALTH: February is American Heart Month

On December 30, 1963, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued Proclamation 3566 designating February as American Heart Month. Congress, by joint resolution on that date, requested that all Presidents issue an annual proclamation to continue this special awareness month. At that time, more than half the deaths in the United States were caused by cardiovascular disease. Sadly, the numbers of deaths each year due to heart disease and stroke continue to grow. It is estimated that 17 million deaths globally each year are attributed to heart disease. That number is expected to grow to more than 23 million by 2030, according to the American Heart Association. Read more
