Another heartbreak

Western Colorado fires have again claimed a life, this time, that of a helicopter pilot who was fighting the Gold Mountain Fire. The man’s chopper crashed into Silver Jack Reservoir on Sunday evening and a dive team later recovered his body from the craft.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to all who knew and loved the pilot, as well as to all involved emergency responders, and we extend our gratitude to everyone who fights fires. This is a tough year for the Western Slope and the state of Colorado.

Please, continue to heed the fire bans. And thank you to everyone who turned out in Gunnison, along U.S. 50, in Montrose, in Olathe, Delta, Grand Junction and points between to pay respects as the fallen pilot’s procession passed by on Monday morning.
