Words of the day — Have you ever accepted a challenge, confident that "I've got this"? Last year, I did, assuming I would know most of the 365 words on a daily "Words You Should Know to Sound Smart" calendar.

Well ... let's just say I didn't ace the thing. I kept each tear-away from every day that had a word I didn't know. The number: 103. This is Katharhynn from the Newsroom, who knows what her New Year's resolution ought to be!

How about you? Did you make any resolutions for the year? Drop us a line on NABUR!

A roof overhead — Exciting news for Shepherd's Hand, the local charity that has helped those down on their luck for several years. The Shepherd's Hand Center, which opened last year at 505 S. Second St., went from tenant to owner when it signed the paperwork last week.

The purchase, made at a discount thanks to the generosity of the building's owner, relied on several substantial donations. With building ownership comes more surety for Shepherd's Hand, which continues to need donations to maintain operations.

You can talk to Garey Martinez to lend a hand, whether as a donor or as a volunteer: 970-275-7215.

Many losses ... While the entertainment world was still reeling from the loss of Betty White on New Year's Eve, 2022 hit with a few more: Dwayne Hickman, who played Dobie Gillis on "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis," died Jan. 9. Also on Jan. 9. comedian Bob Saget, of "Full House" fame was found dead in his hotel room. He was only 65.

We wish peace to their family and friends, as well as peace and comfort to anyone who is grieving the loss of a loved one. It doesn't matter how famous someone is, or is not. Loss hurts.

Several options are available locally if you are struggling with grief. Here are a few:

COVID-19 Grief Group, through Touch of Care Hospice, meets the last Tuesday of each month at 1100 E. Main St., Montrose. The next one is at noon, Tuesday, Jan. 25. Info: 970-787-9988.
