No prairie dogs on the horizon (but case made for Thunderbirds) | From the Newsroom

Paying tribute to Bob Wick —
The Montrose Daily Press truly is part of a family newspaper chain — Wick Communications. Last Thursday, we lost a family member here, Robert Wick, who led the company for almost 60 years.

I am saddened by his passing. Bob was not a remote figure, but a man who would visit Montrose from time to time, with a clear interest in what was happening here, and he took an interest in other people — always with a kind word.

He was also an artist, who shared his sculpting talents. Two of his works grace the front lawns of the Montrose Daily Press building; if you ever wondered where those sculptures came from, they came from Bob's hands.

This is Katharhynn from the newsroom, missing Bob, and wishing his family peace and healing during this difficult time.

Every year: Don't feed the deer — We know it's tempting, but ... when you see a deer you think is hungry, leave it alone. The same applies to other wildlife. It's not only illegal, it is a hindrance rather than a help, wildlife officials remind.

If you leave food, they will come — and when they congregate, they can spread diseases among themselves.

Also, food outside of their normal diet (think birdseed or hay) is a shock to their system. They can die. No doubt, the people who feed deer have the opposite intent.

No prairie dogs on the horizon ... Maybe you saw what looks like a Montrose Daily Press article circulating online; one that announces Montrose High School is changing its mascot to the Prairie Dogs.

To cut to the chase: Nope. What's happened is someone posted a 17-year-old article from our April Fool's parody edition (and that person duly noted it was from the April Fool's paper of 2005). But not everyone who saw the article as it circulated on social media saw the disclaimer. So, to reiterate: To our knowledge, Montrose sports teams will not be "the Prairie Dogs."

The April Fool's joke from long ago is circulating again because of some real news the Daily Press has been reporting for months: The school district has to change Native-inspired mascots due to a new state law. That affects Montrose High, currently "The Indians," Centennial Middle School, currently "The Braves" and possibly Johnson Elementary, "The Thunderbirds."

The school district recently made its case for keeping the Thunderbirds and you can read about that here in this real, not-a-parody article.

You can also weigh in on Centennial mascot choices on NABUR.
