Hello again!

Hello again, after a hiatus, Montrose. I'm fresh off vacation, and already, the year is off to a roaring start.

The good:
No drama or danger, just work

Today, Jan. 6, one of the most contentious elections in U.S. history was certified — with no drama and no rioting, as was feared after the 2021 insurrection attempt. Just elected representatives, doing their jobs. That's the way it used to be. The way it should always be. Many thanks to the adults in the halls of government, who today — and regardless their political views — participated in the certification of the Electoral College. Read more here.

The sad: The death of a good man

President Jimmy Carter died Dec. 29, leaving behind a legacy of humanitarianism. Carter was praised across the political spectrum for his work and as an exemplar human being, although unfortunately, a local state representative, who was not even born when Carter was president, saw fit to post a celebratory tweet — hastily withdrawn and followed by an apology. Here is Managing Editor Jeremy Morrison's take on that

Montrose and surrounding areas can still honor Carter if they wish: Habitat for Humanity of the San Juans is raising a symbolic wall and door, meant to represent the opportunities Carter opened for beneficiaries of the nonprofit. You can go to the Montrose ReStore, 1601 N. Townsend,  to sign the door with a respectful message until Jan. 10, when a short ceremony will be held at 3 p.m.
