Montrose braces for economic wallop as timber mill teeters on brink of closure Montrose Forest Products may close in early November, taking with it 90 onsite jobs while hitting hundreds more in related industries, in a blow to both the local economy and to forest health. “For months, we searched for a buyer who could continue operating the mill in Montrose, but we were unable to secure one,” said Jim Neiman, president of Neiman Enterprises, in an announcement Tuesday, when the company issued a federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act 60-day announcement regarding the potential closure of the mill. Employees were notified earlier that day. “We continue to evaluate all available options; however, because none currently ensures the mill will remain open, providing formal notice to our employees was a necessary step,” Neiman said. But even with lofty goals, it’s nice to reach a moment where the team can really sit back and reflect on the growth of the program. The Red Hawks scored a 5-1 win over Grand Junction last week, the first win over the Tigers since the fall of 2022. Montrose has been a team on the rise over the last two seasons, and this win over GJ is just another benchmark in the process. Read More Dr. Carrie Stephenson agrees to resign as MCSD superintendent, district agrees to severance package After months of lingering on paid, non-punitive leave Dr. Carrie Stephenson is no longer the superintendent of the Montrose County School District, having signed an “employment separation, resignation and release agreement” on Sept. 3. “This is not how I imagined my service to MCSD would end,” she said in a statement released this week. Stephenson served as Montrose’s superintendent for six years. In her statement, she cites a recent shift on the MCSD Board of Education — referring to a new conservative majority that took the board in the last election with the support of the Montrose Republicans — as relevant to her exit. “In my opinion, this Board majority wanted me gone,” Stephenson wrote. “That was made clear publicly and privately.” Read More
