Local GOP schism offers microcosm of bigger picture ...

For a while now, there's been a schism within the Montrose County Republican Party. It's most visible form has been the public critique of a former party chairman of the current party chairman.

In today's Montrose Daily Press we explore the local, internal GOP discussion — which basically involves how one feels about the party chairman also running for a county commission seat in the primary — and how that local discussion reflects a larger state-level conversation going on within the Republican Party.

On the slopes, the rocks, the rivers and ice faces, "safe" is relative. Making a wrong decision can mean certain death — and making all the right ones could still end in disaster.

Welcome to Montrose, the non-sanctuary — County and city embrace 'symbolic' immigration resolutions

Following the lead of other communities around the state, Montrose — both county and city — declared this to be a "non-sanctuary" area this week, establishing a defensive stance in the face of the recent influx of immigrants to Colorado. Montrose County passes 'non-sanctuary' resolution ...

Citing the potential strain on resources caused by the influx of immigrants to the state, and following similar moves by other local governments in Colorado, Montrose County officials passed a resolution Wednesday declaring the county to be a "non-sanctuary county."

Roger Rash, chairman of the Montrose County Board of Commissioners, put it like this: "... we're going to take care of our citizens, first and foremost. And, it's about time that government does that, because our border is a sieve and those people are just flooding across it — with the help of our own government — and I find that absolutely despicable. We're not taking care of our veterans, we're not taking care of our own homeless people and we're allowing this, and I find that very despicable."
