Local GOP schism offers microcosm of bigger picture ...

For a while now, there's been a schism within the Montrose County Republican Party. It's most visible form has been the public critique of a former party chairman of the current party chairman.

In today's Montrose Daily Press we explore the local, internal GOP discussion — which basically involves how one feels about the party chairman also running for a county commission seat in the primary — and how that local discussion reflects a larger state-level conversation going on within the Republican Party.

Following the lead of other communities around the state, Montrose — both county and city — declared this to be a "non-sanctuary" area this week, establishing a defensive stance in the face of the recent influx of immigrants to Colorado. It's not a stance that sits well with those working with the local migrant community.

Of wilderness and ringtails

The late winter sun bathes the crimson cliffs of Dominguez Canyon. Silence saturates the wilderness void between its cliff walls. Cotton ball clouds are few, drifting lazily through the sapphire sky.
