Good afternoon, Montrose, and happy Cinco de Mayo! Justin here, delivering your newsletter for today. Now, I know we're in the middle of a pandemic, which may slow down some festivities, but did you know that in a normal year, America actually celebrates Cinco de Mayo more than Mexico does? So enjoy a margarita or a taco or a cerveza today.
The PAUSE Act, which stands for "Protect Animals from Unnecessary Suffering and Exploitation," is a statewide initiative that, if it gets on the ballot, threatens Colorado agriculture as a whole. A group aims to bring the initiative to voters. Essentially, the bill greatly broadens the definition of animal abuse and criminalizes certain animal husbandry practices. Maybe most damaging to cattle ranchers is that they wouldn't be allowed to slaughter cattle until the animal turns 5, if the act were passed. Staff writer Cassie Knust talked with locals in the agriculture industry as well as political leaders to get a sense of how harmful the PAUSE Act would be to our area.
Rounding up pro sports... Aaron Rodgers to the Broncos? Reports from around the NFL point to the three-time MVP QB leaving the Packers before the start of the 2021 season. Some rumors peg the Broncos as the team most interested. Let me know what you think it would take for the Broncos to get the trade done or let me know how you would feel if you got to see Rodgers in the orange and blue. I'll feature some of your answers in the next newsletter – just email me at justint@montrosepress.com. A Denver Nugget MVP? Could it be? Could a 26-year-old Serbian actually win the NBA MVP. Experts think so. The 6-11 center is just as skilled a passer as he is a rebounder and scorer, and he's just damn fun to watch. He's averaging 26.3 points, 10.9 rebounds and 8.5 assists. He would be the first Nuggets player to ever win the league MVP award.
As for our Rockies... there's not a lot to be said... no, seriously... they stink. And it doesn't look like it's going to get any better. But they did win a game with a walk-off slam last night at Coors Field.
Finally, Happy Teacher Appreciation Week. It's been tough out there for teachers during the pandemic. Thank a teacher today for everything they do.
