Good afternoon, Montrose, and happy Thursday!

This is Justin bringing a few notes to you today. Nothing too big. Just a couple items to get you through the rest of your afternoon.

On this day in 1937, the German Hindenburg burst into flames, killing passengers and crew members aboard the dirigible.

It was labeled as the pride of Nazi Germany — the biggest dirigible ever built. Measuring 804 feet in length, it departed from Frankfurt on May 3 before reaching its destination across the Atlantic Ocean at the Lakehurst's Navy Air Base. Those who studied the disaster think a spark ignited the hydrogen core. The hydrogen in the craft completely burned up in a matter of about 90 seconds.

Check out this old-timey newsreel. Actual news footage of the disaster was distributed around the world. And note the sensational language. Ahh, the age of yellow journalism.

A light note for difficult times: Montrose County School District students will have a chance to celebrate their overcoming of hardships throughout 2020 and 2021, as they were tossed from online-only learning, to partial in-person learning, to playing and recreating in masks.

They're calling it the Power of Hope Parade, and it's taking place next Wednesday at 3 p.m., beginning at 1035 E. Main. It's the district's first ever district-wide parade.

Shameless plug: I have to give a quick shoutout to Double Barrel Tacos, located downtown, just because they sort of remind me of back home in Dallas (I know, now you can stone me).

Very good tacos — not authentic at all, in case that's what you are looking for. They're for people who want something different. Imagine Texas BBQ meets tacos. Really good. And the queso will have you wanting more and more.

The folks who run it are nice, too. They're from Texas, and they're planning on opening a little eatery next door as well, with a completely different cuisine. The owners occupy the building where The Vine used to be, as well as the old Maggie's Books store, 345 E. Main. Just nice to see new good spots to eat taking up more space downtown. Follow them on social media @doublebarreltaco

We're looking for help in the newsroom! I have a staff writer position open right now, and I'm looking for folks interested in journalism. This is entry level, and no experience is required. But, some experience helps. Oh, and you have to be somewhat savvy with sports. Just shoot me an email — justint@montrosepress.com — with a resumé if you're interested or know someone who might be.

Yearlong investigation results in arrest. You may or may not have heard about the Suzanne Morphy missing persons case over the past year.

The Chaffee County woman went missing last year, and her husband was arrested today, charged with murder, just a couple days shy of a year since she went missing.

The Ouray County Plaindealer reported that Mason Stansfield, a local mountaineer, died when he fell into a crevasse skiing on a glacier in Denali National Park. There's a paywall to the story, but there are some other sources out there if you want to read about it.
