Did you miss the party?

I hope not! The Mexican American Development Association brought a big one to town on Saturday. The Monte de Rosas Fiesta had plenty of fun, food, and a kicking dance party at the end of the night, when an estimated 2,000 people celebrated the historic Tortilla Flats neighborhood and Hispanic culture. Everyone was invited; loads of folks came!

Earlier in the day, I had the honor of watching girls and young women compete to be the fiesta princess and queen. Each contestant brought talent to the stage, unshaken by the number of people watching. "I am proud of where I'm from," queen contestant Sofia Garcia said, reciting her original poetry.

Congrats to all who competed, and a special congratulations to Fiesta Queen Evani Erives Palacios and Fiesta Princess Gracie Lemus!

The Ride of Chucky

I also enjoyed the vendors and especially the magnificently tricked out bicycles on display in the corner of La Raza Park for the fiesta. Chucky had the coolest ride in town — outside of the fiesta car show, that is!

Scam-a-lot

Back in May, we told you about a Montrose woman who was scammed by a savvy operator. The person impersonated law enforcement and provided convincing information to indicate the woman had missed federal jury summons and would be arrested immediately if she did not post a hefty bond. The scammer was in it for the long haul; terrorizing her into staying on the phone with him for hours as she followed all of his instructions, and threatening her with dire consequences if the call ended for any reason. She came forward after her ordeal to stop it from happening to others.

Last week, the Montrose County Sheriff's Office issued a warning about a similar scam making the rounds, one in which the caller claims to be a deputy with a warrant for your arrest over missed jury duty unless - you guessed it - you pony up a big chunk of change.

That's not how it works. Law enforcement agencies do not demand cash over the phone for missed jury duty. No matter how persuasive the caller is, just hang up. Then, report it to 970-249-9110 (non-emergency dispatch).
