Celebrating Montrose Hispanic culture at its center: Monte de Rosas Fiesta returns, welcoming all After revamping four years ago, the Monte de Rosas Fiesta is on Saturday, Aug. 15 returning to La Raza Park — not quite where it originated, but still, a fitting location. “This is the fourth year we’re hosting it at La Raza Park. The event actually goes back (decades),” said Bethany Maher, executive director of the Mexican American Development Association, or MADA, which is presenting this year’s fiesta. Traditionally, Monte de Rosas was celebrated downtown in Centennial Plaza, even though the community members who organized it lived in the northern Montrose neighborhood residents call Tortilla Flats. The fiesta went on hiatus in 2013, until MADA revived it in 2022 as part of its 50th anniversary. The four-day period from July 25 to 28 included the first- and third-hottest days in Colorado’s recorded history, as measured by the statewide average temperature. The statewide average of 78.75 degrees Fahrenheit on July 27 exceeded the previous daily record, set in 2005, by more than 1.5 degrees. A Montrose delivery station made sense, based on the population and demand. “We start with customers and work backwards with everything. We invested in our Grand Junction site and launched that site last year,” said Sam Bailey, senior manager of economic development policy for Amazon in a Colorado. “As our customer demand continued to grow in various markets. There was a centroid of customers we needed to serve in Montrose. It reached the point where we said we need to make that next investment, create the range that allows Grand Junction to be successful and then create a station that will allow this station to be successful here, which is why we reached out to Montrose EDC,” Bailey added, referring to Montrose Economic Development Corp.
