Good afternoon, Montrose!
Spring has finally sprung! But, because this is Colorado, I know that we're not quite out of the wintery woods yet. I went on a breakfast picnic on Sunday at Riverbottom Park in summer clothes, but had to leave sooner than I had hoped for because it was chillier than expected.
I hope that all of the MCSD teachers, staff and students on spring break next week has a wonderful vacation! Y'all deserve it.
A new high school building?
The plan is a roadmap for the facilities improvements the district needs to make in the near and distant future: expanding the Early Childhood Center and replacing the high school are two of the top priorities.
Replacing the high school won't be cheap — the current estimate is $115.5 million for the entire project — but parts of the building are over 80 years old and over one-third of the total deferred maintenance in MCSD is at the high school alone. In the upcoming weeks, I'd like to look into how the high school building has changed over the years and do a deeper dive into what a new high school would be like. If you're an alum of MHS, I'm curious about what the building was like when you were a student! Shoot me an email if you'd like to share (annalynnw@montrosepress.com).
Cedar Point Health joining new MRH complex
Cedar Point will consolidate its three existing clinics into an entire floor of the center, which will be operated by NexCore, a health care real estate investment and development company.
The new MRH isn't the only new medical center in the works in Montrose: an outpatient facility is going to go into the Colorado Outdoors development. QHR Health, which used to manage Montrose Regional Hospital, will be the operator.
Dozens of youth wrestlers compete in state tournament
I'm going to be honest with y'all: before I saw this story from our sports writer Josue Perez, I didn't know that youth wrestling was a thing. But of course it is!
All of the 26 elementary and middle school athletes from Montrose Elite that competed in the regional competition went on to state, where two elementary students took first place and the team was in fifth place overall.
A big congrats to all of the competitors!
You may recall that last month, MHS junior Dmarian Lopez won the championship in his weight class. Lopez also took part in the Montrose Elite program when he was younger.
