Good evening and hello!

Thinking about what to put in your pack before you head for a trip outdoors this summer? Mark Rackay has you covered.

One of our many outdoors contributors, Rackay wrote about some items he places in his pack before heading out the door. I appreciated him mentioning cards, which is something I almost always take with me.

He shares some other items that might be useful in his article, so give it a read. It's really helpful, I must say.

And don't forget about Linda McIntosh's outdoor articles. If you're an avid gardener or you are just starting out and need some tips, she shares great information.

John Unger, Bill Harris and Joel Evans share some information, too, of all things outdoors related. The official start of summer was on Tuesday, so the timing couldn't be better.

Thanks to our outdoors contributors for their work!

USS Montrose crew members back in Montrose

Tomorrow at 11 a.m. near city hall, crew members of the USS Montrose will reunite for one final time.

The USS Montrose is a decorated attack transport that spent over 20 years in service. You can learn more about why it was called the Montrose in my story here and why crew members are excited to reunite in town.

During my time with the Daily Press, I have gone back into the archives to see clips from the 1940s and 1950s. News was, obviously, completely different back then, but it is always a good opportunity to search what was buzzing in Montrose then.

I'm sure Daily Press reporters had something to say about the USS Montrose. But Bob Hahn, president of the USS Montrose Association, will be able to let you know more about the Montrose on Saturday. He will be at the memorial to commemorate crew members who have died since the last reunion.

Canfield departs

Deputy coroner Rick Fellabaum was appointed coroner during a special meeting of the Montrose County commissioners on Thursday.

He steps in for longtime Montrose County coroner Dr. Thomas Canfield, who turned in a resignation letter on June 20. Canfield cited severe health issues in his letter.

"(Canfield's) service to the county has been amazing over the decades," Montrose County Commissioner Keith Caddy said, after the meeting. "The services as a pathologist for Western Colorado, he did an amazing job over many years. His services are much-appreciated."

We plan to write a full feature on Canfield in an upcoming edition. Stay tuned!

Before you go...

- A lot of you have been asking about the solar farm between Olathe and Delta off U.S. 50. Well, we have more details, which you can read here.

- Also, here are more notes on golf in Montrose from Steve Woody, an MDP contributor. A lot of MHS and OHS teams are at camps right now or conducting offseason training, but there are plenty of golf events this summer.

Have a great weekend.
