Devastating By now, you've likely heard about the Oct. 4 fire that destroyed a longtime dry cleaning business in Delta. The Delta Dry Cleaners burned to the ground, and its owners, who lived above their business, also lost their home. Kraai family patriarch Rick also sustained burn injuries. The building itself was more than 100 years old and was historic. We do no yet know what caused the fire. What we do know is how prompt and professional firefighters and other emergency responders were, since they stopped the fire from destroying the rest of the block, evacuated folks, and also blocked streets during the response to keep curious passersby safe. Thank you, Delta Fire Department, Delta Police Department, Delta County Sheriff's Office and others who responded. Just a few days later, on Sunday, they were again called to fight a fire downtown. This time, it was the former Jeans Westerner building, right next door to an assisted living center. Preliminary reports are that its owners were also displaced, although they escaped injury, and the building was not as extensively damaged as the dry cleaners. Our thoughts are with this family, too. We have not yet heard about efforts to help the Jeans Westerner building owners, but Delta is banding together to help the Kraais. CB's Tavern is hosting a Tap Night Friday from 4 - 9 p.m., with a meal deal and silent auction to benefit the family. As well, a GoFundMe account has so far raised about $42K. Thank you, Delta, and surrounding communities, for caring! (Fire response to the Delta Dry Cleaners on Oct. 4. Photo by Hilary Becker, whose name I got wrong in our Oct. 6 story. Many apologies to Hilary!)
