Having a ball

Folks, if you don't know about the Welcome Home Alliance for Veterans/Warrior Resource Center, you are missing out. It's a nonprofit, not tied to a formal organization other than its own, and it helps active-duty military, veterans and their families with services, resources, and — perhaps most important — camaraderie.

On Saturday, I was lucky enough to see and experience that, despite never serving in the military, when I attended the Blue Jean Ball for Veterans. The ball raised funds while also giving everyone a great time, and tasty food. Plus, it honored several community members, sponsors, volunteers and board members.

If you missed the Blue Jean Ball, you can still help Welcome Home. Visit them at 4 Hillcrest Plaza Way in Montrose, call 970-765-2210, or visit the website. There's still time to buy a raffle ticket for a collector's rifle, a .22 Silverboy Pheasants Forever gun ($20 per ticket; $30 for two).

Heartbreaking situation

Keep your eyes out ... for two indoor-only cats that suddenly found themselves released outside after their owner passed away. They were released with two others from an apartment on North Third Street and Uncompahgre Avenue on Oct. 5. One of the cats was sadly hit and killed on the street. Another one (the one pictured) was successfully trapped, but advocates are trying to find the remaining two, who look like the found cat - one is shorthaired and the other longhaired. These cats are likely terrified, having never been outdoors. Please call or text 970-691-4412 or 970-210-3182 if you have information. (I am passing this information along, only, and am not involved in the search. It just makes me sad.)
