Tragedy strikes twice

Last week was a hard one for the regional community, when we lost two people in separate crashes, both on US 50 in Delta County. On Dec. 3, a Delta woman pulling across the highway from Pioneer Road collided with an oncoming pickup; she did not survive. Her passenger and the driver of the other vehicle reportedly sustained minor injuries. Then, on Dec. 5, another crash, this time at G50 Road. Initial reports were of severe injury. The Delta County Sheriff's Office later updated with the sad news that another person had died.

We extend sincerest condolences to the survivors the two victims leave behind, and gratitude to all first responders, as well as to the motoring public, who exhibited patience during lengthy detours due to lane closures on the highway for both crashes.

It's a good time to remember: Crashes happen. They can happen in an instant. They can happen to someone you love. They can happen to you. I was sharply reminded of both of those possibilities within a two-week period this past June, although, despite the severity of both accidents — and by the grace of God — I did not lose anyone and, in my crash, no one was hurt.

Please drive safely.
