Sure could do with some peace on Earth

This weekend, the tragedies hit with breakneck speed. A shooting on Saturday at Brown University in Rhode Island left dead students Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, CBS reports.  A gunman - still at large Monday morning - entered their classroom and opened fire. Others were injured in the shooting, which put the campus on lockdown for hours, and initially led to one man being detained as a person of interest, although he was since released.

In Australia, two gunmen, said to be a father and son, targeted Jewish people celebrating Hanukkah by the Sea on Bondi Beach, killing 15, including a 10-year-old girl, a Holocaust survivor, and two rabbis. The older gunman was killed; his son was wounded and taken into custody. The rampage ended in part because of the extraordinary bravery of Ahmed al Ahmed, a shop owner, who is seen on video tackling one of the gunmen from behind, wresting away the firearm, and pointing it at the man until he backs away. Ahmed was wounded in taking the alleged gunman down.

Then, from Brentwood, came news of the apparent murders of director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, a photographer. Their son, Nick, is in custody.

Every death is a tragedy. So many within hours — in such horrific circumstances — is rending. We extend sympathy and peace to everyone affected by these terrible events.
