Fur furor

If you haven't checked out this weekend's paper, here are some highlights.

Kylea Henseler did an excellent piece about citizen efforts to have the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission ban commercial sales of wildlife fur. Petition backers say the regulations as they stand are not logical, and they hint at poor enforcement. Meanwhile, they say, the commercial fur market acts as an incentive to trappers. Their petition creates several carve-outs and would not apply to personal use of fur.

In a separate story, Kylea takes a look at a program that aims to increase agricultural literacy among local students. As the story states, you wouldn't think kids who pass by several farms a day would be confused about where their food comes from, but local teachers found that some are. Enter the Montrose Cattlewomen, who developed an initiative and lesson plans to increase this knowledge among our students. Kudos to the Cattlewomen, teachers Rebecca Johns and Lisa Franks!

In Saturday's edition, you can also read about retired Montrose coaching legend Todd Casebier's second act, and a new, bold housing initiative by the folks at Community Options.

Happy reading!
