A sneak peek at tomorrow's print edition of the Montrose Daily Press ...

In tomorrow's print edition of the Montrose Daily Press, you can read about how this summer's high temperatures are impacting fish in local waterways; and also about the fractures and schisms on display inside the Montrose City Council chambers; as well as about a state law designed to stop vulnerable adults from getting ripped off by scams.

Also in tomorrow's print edition, you can read about Montrose resident Kelvin Kent, who was recently invited to Buckingham Palace to receive a royal honor for his military service. Kent served in Borneo, during the Brunei Revolt and larger Borneo Confrontation, which ran from 1962-66. His time in the military also took him to Nepal, and after retiring he enjoyed a second life participating in landmark Himalayan expeditions. Eventually, Kent settled in Montrose, raised a family and became active in the community. As a board member for Western Colorado Friends of the Himalayas, he helps raise funds to support healthcare and education initiatives in the Nepal and Himalayan region.

Have a Good One,

MHS softball team does not intend to miss the party this year; Red Hawks return with talented core, including Bentley Schiller — an ace on the mound and a threat with a bat

The 2025 season was crucial in the development of the Montrose softball program. For the first time since 2013, the Red Hawks finished the year with a winning record. They advanced to regionals where two losses ended their season short of making the state tournament.

They have no intention of missing the party this year.

Montrose returns a strong, talented core that has a lot of versatility throughout the lineup. Aubrey Blacker is back as a junior after the leading the team with a .388 average. Isabelle Mott also returns as a senior after hitting for .338 and driving in 20 runs. That was second most on the team behind sophomore Bentley Schiller.

‘This is about … what kind of community we want to help to create’; Montrose City Council wrestles with schisms while muscling proposed charter amendments towards the November ballot

While the Montrose City Council can at times roll along as if things are normal, churning through work sessions and meetings of the municipal mundane, the breakdown in the machinery is easy enough to see.

This week, the breakdown was on display at the end of Monday’s work session — after council members raved about tamales and lemonade they enjoyed at the recent Monte de Rosas Fiesta — when Councilor Dave Frank shifted gears and talked about needing to “set a line in the sand” and proclaimed “enough is enough.” It was on display again during Tuesday night’s council meeting, when Councilor J. David Reed nodded to the turbulence of recent months and spoke of the five council members as if they were estranged souls seeking reunion: "we can find our way back to each other.”

‘We’re really hoping to get some good ideas’: Surveys, open houses will provide Rec District feedback for new field house project

The Montrose Recreation District is putting millions of dollars into a new field house intended to serve the community for decades to come, and Deputy Director Jeremy Master hopes the process will make locals get emotional— in a good way.

Next Wednesday, on Aug. 26, the district will host the first of multiple open houses to help designers figure out what the community wants to see in its new space at the former Secret Creek building at 1227 Mayfly Drive.

Architectural renderings will be presented at the meeting, and Master hopes they’ll get residents’ creative juices flowing and trigger big thoughts.

“We want to hear what people love and hate and are excited about,” he said.
