Hi and hello! Baby it's cold outside! Montrose saw its first snow last night and while it's not a heavy blanket today, it seems to be a preview of the coming weeks. It's also Colorado Gives Day! The day provides increased incentives for non-profits who receive donations through the ColoradoGives website. ColoradoGives pulls monies from the $1.6 million Incentives Fund, and any "gifts" given today increases the value of the donation. You can search the website for a nonprofit of your choice. Nonprofits such as the Valley Symphony Association and Hispanic Affairs Project can be found on the platform. As always, let me know your thoughts! Feel free to share any interesting trivia, history or info you think the rest of the community should know about at cassiek@montrosepress.com

Valley Youth Orchestra Strings in School returned: The VYO performed for K-5 students last Friday at Oak Grove and Johnson Elementary, as well as middle and high school students at Colorado West Christian School in Montrose. "This is our primary educational outreach and a way to share our love of string instruments with youth in the Valley," said VYO Interim Conductor and Manager Laura Payne of the performances. You can donate to the VYO through ColoradoGives, increasing the amount the nonprofit receives. The VYO is looking to purchase equipment storage, a cargo trailer, 20-25 music stands and a stand rack for efficient transportation, a portable Roland keyboard with weighted keys, a stand and a speaker. They also need new stands and a piano. The VYO budget doesn't accommodate for these items.
A fire heavily damaged an Epitaph Road home: A fire displaced a Montrose County woman out of her home this morning on Epitaph Rd, the blaze rendering the house uninhabitable due to smoke and fire damage. The woman was thankfully able to quickly and safely leave her house when the smoke detector alerted her to the emergency. Neighbors were nearby to help her in the aftermath of the incident. You can read the full report here.
Have you heard of C. diff? You may not have and that's understandable - the condition isn't well-known, but it's highly contagious and potentially deadly. Between COVID-19, the flu, emergencies and other visits to the hospital, patients may be more susceptible to contracting a lesser-known bacterium known as Clostridioides difficile, or C. diff, a germ that causes severe diarrhea and inflammation of the colon (colitis). Although more prevalent and deadly in older adults, the bacterium can be caught randomly by touching an item that an infected person handled (these spores can live on surfaces for several months) or even by taking antibiotics too long. Remember to wash your hands regularly and to take your probiotics! We're hiring! The Montrose Daily Press has open routes. Earn an extra $800* a month for just a few hours a day.
