| | Farewell to Bob Dole: Senator Bob Dole, a Republican stalwart, one-time presidential candidate, and a war hero, left us this weekend. Dole, who died Dec. 5 at 98, survived battle wounds in WWII that could have killed him and went on to serve in politics. Perhaps people scoff at the notion that politics are a form of service. It's easy to understand why, when we see the stories of self-serving politicians. Although Dole was not a perfect man (no one is), he represented the Greatest Generation, as well as a time in our country when those seeking power could — at least to an extent — put animus aside for a greater good. You can read more about his extraordinary life here. This is Katharhynn from the newsroom, wishing peace to the memory of Bob Dole and comfort to his family.
Montrose in the spirit of the season: Montrose welcomed Christmastime on Saturday in resuming the annual Parade of Lights. Floats galore and seasonal joy made any waiting in the cold worth the while. Good times, this! Special thanks to Joseph Harold for the photos. You can see more on his Facebook page.
Dry November spells trouble: I know it's dry. You know it's dry. And, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor it is really, really dry. Montrose County is in moderate to severe drought and this section of the state is in a La Nina weather pattern, which tends to be light on snow.
Speaking of Christmas ... You can harvest your own tree! Staff Writer Anna Lynn Winfrey laid out how in this fun piece. Did you know Hessian soldiers are credited with introducing the tradition of Christmas trees in America? Puritan New England did not look kindly on decorating an evergreen, which was an ancient fertility symbol (its branches do not fade in winter's snow, remember?). Get a fuller picture of the history behind the tradition here, at The History Channel.
