It's goodbye for now, folks. Cassie from the newsroom here one last time to bid you farewell.
Tomorrow is my last day with the Montrose Daily Press before I move on to report for KVNF public radio. It's been a privilege reporting the news for you these past two years, and I'll certainly miss the satisfaction of publishing a deeply-researched story or highlighting outstanding locals through features.
I'm sitting here in the office preparing to write a few final stories before I head out, so let's dive into some local happenings!
A family protesting during the public safety complex grand opening last fall was ticketed. Now they're saying their First Amendment rights were violated.
You may recall reading my initial story regarding these two families who were protesting during the long-anticipated grand opening attended by the public, as well as local and state dignitaries. They were there to peacefully protest their late sons, whose deaths, one week apart, were ruled suicides. After I left the event, the Pace family were ticketed for "disrupting lawful assembly" during a "private" event, according to the police report Michelle Pace shared with me. Michelle said she had moved closer to better see the event, but law enforcement officers required her to move back to the designated protest area. I've been researching into this incident and await a response from local law enforcement but keep an eye out for the story. It's an interesting case...the incidents took place on public property and at an event the public were invited to attend. But a permit had been pulled for the grand opening.
The Paces are saying their First Amendment rights were violated that day while law enforcement said protesters disrupted lawful assembly.
A local 8th grader is competing in Ridgway this weekend in adult division Skijoring
I met Kimber Cook yesterday and was blown away at her confidence and ability at just 13 years old. Skijoring is a growing winter sport in which a rider (such as Kimber on the horse in the above photo) pulls a skier they likely met that day. She's been doing this for seven years and is scheduled to compete again this weekend amongst the adult division.
Kimber asked to shout out her "balding Uncle Richard" for inspiring her all these years!
In case you missed it, the city is hosting a community meeting next Wednesday to give an overview of its now released housing needs survey. The survey is part of an ongoing housing needs assessment and can be found here. It's open until Thursday, February 9. You can attend the meeting next Wed. at 6 p.m. in the Centennial Conference Room in the City Hall Annex Building located at 433 South 1st Street. So long and farewell, Montrose! You can soon find me on the airwaves. Stay well, Cassie
