 | | | | My first rodeo ... The Montrose County Fair and Rodeo kicked off over the weekend and has a lineup of events splashed all throughout the week. People have been telling me what a big deal this annual event is, and now I see what they mean.
This is actually not quite my first rodeo. I vaguely remember my parents taking me to one when I was about 5-years-old. Mostly I remember how red the dirt was in the arena and how sticky and pink and delicious the cotton candy was at the snack bar. I have no memories of bulls or belt buckles or the flinch of the crowd as a rider gets bucked. So, for all practical purposes, this is pretty much my first rodeo.
Of course, I'm looking forward to the headlining events this weekend — the actual rodeo — but there's a lot more to Montrose's fair than bull riding. For instance, there's sheep riding, for the kids, which looks like so much fun that it kinda makes me wish I met the weight-limit threshold to give it a go.
And there's the animal showcases and auctions, where local youth raise animals — swine, goats, cows and more — with the hope of fetching high dollars come Saturday's auction. Then there's the less-typical events, such as a magician showcase and book signings from local authors. Whether you enjoy watching the rodeo or not, there's likely something in this rich lineup that will be of interest to you.
