Happy Independence Day!

I'm a day early with that, but our July 4 paper will not be delivered until July 5, because of the federal holiday affecting mail delivery. (You can still see the July 4 edition online, bright and early tomorrow, though.)

Montrose has a full slate of activities planned, starting a 8 a.m. with a free pancake breakfast; start your day with a short stack at Welcome Home Alliance for Veterans, 4 Hillcrest Plaza Way, then make your way down to Main Street by 10 a.m. to see the parade! This begins at Pythian Avenue and heads through town.

At 3 p.m. stop by Family Fun Day at Cerise Park to enjoy games for kids, beverages for adults (for purchase) and then, at 5:30, the Montrose Community Band at the amphitheater there, featuring "Rapids and Reflections," By Vance Courturier and Natalie Powers, followed by the Brown Family Band at 7 p.m.

Last, but definitely not least: Fireworks at dusk, from Sunset Mesa above Cerise Park.

Not to be outdone, our neighbors to the north in Delta devoted the weekend to a first-time hot air balloon party, which wraps up July 4. Tons of activities there; head over to Confluence Park. Delta will also shoot off fireworks, also at Confluence Park.

Below, a hint of what's in store at the balloon festival, courtesy reader Richard Rogers.

Not many people lying in a hospital with severe burn injuries would use the word "blessed" to describe their condition. For Rachel Horst, though, the word is apt.

OPINION: Anacreon in Heaven
Many years ago, maybe 70, I was playing some LPs of old British songs, (Then, there were no CDs or cassettes, and LP's had just replaced 10-inch 78 rpm records), and I ran across one titled: "To Anacreon in Heaven."
