Ouray's Jurassic pathway ...
Sometimes the geography of the Western Slope, the mountains and hills and many-shaped rocks look like ancient, sleeping creatures that may come to life and roam the region again — the landscape lends itself to such prehistoric visuals. In the hills above Ouray — on Gold Hill and West Gold Hill — there are trackways, paths of impressions, stamped into the ground and left exposed by glacial activity. These impressions were left by a sauropod dinosaur and represent an example of several notable paleontological finds. Rick Trujillo, a retired a geologist in Ouray, is more known for launching the Imogene Pass Run. But well before he got into mountain running, when he was about 10 years old, Trujillo found these dino-tracks while hiking with some friends. You can read about this dinosaur pathway and its paleontological notables in the Montrose Daily Press's recent article, "Stepping back in time."
