Is Montrose due a new charter school?

Will a new charter school be opening in Montrose? That remains to be seen, with Montrose Classical Academy currently undergoing a review process with the Montrose County School District.

This week, the MCSD school board approved MCA's charter application, meaning the proposed charter school will begin a review process during which school board members will assess whether or not to green light the school. Already, members have expressed concerns, citing MCA's inability thus far to secure a physical location for the school, as well as raising questions about the charter's projected enrollment numbers and related fiscal viability.

"We need to be careful that we don't approve a charter school that's not actually viable," MCSD school board President Sarah Fishering warned. "That would be bad."

Following the board's approval of MCA's initial application, Kay Alexander, the charter's founder and primary energy behind the effort to establish the school, said that she was glad to be moving into the review process.

"We're moving forward, so we're pleased with that," Alexander said, sounding confident about addressing any concerns the school board has about the charter's viability.

The school board will be making a final decision on the Montrose Classical Academy in December. Between now and then the board will host several public meetings during which the issue will be discussed. To catch up on where this issues rests currently, read our story, published in Wednesday's print edition: Charter school effort moves forward, despite concerns.

Frisch & Hurd, an assessment of the field

Also in our Wednesday's print edition, publisher Dennis Anderson explores the CD3 field, where candidates Adam Frisch and Jeff Hurd are vying for Lauren Boebert's seat in congress and a chance to represent the Western Slope in Washington D.C.

Frisch is a Democrat from Aspen. Hurd is a Republican from Grand Junction. In some ways, these guys are pretty similar — in other ways, they differ sharply. Check out our story: Common threads & diverging paths — Diving into the similarities and differences between CD3 candidates Adam Frisch and Jeff Hurd.
