Rock on As I reflected on my first trip up Mount Sneffels for a feature in Saturday's paper, it dawned on me that another hiking season has comeand gone, and I feel like I hardly did anything. That's not entirely true...or true at all. I've had an awesome summer hiking around Ouray, and on the Mesa, and enjoying the outdoors in other ways. But, something about living here just makes you want to bag peaks. This year, I didn't do a whole lot of that, and I'm actually ok with it. One thing I did get more into is rock climbing, which is such a cool thing to have accesible nearby. It's a spot I've always thought is so coo, but it also has such high barriers to entry. You need gear, which can be acquired, but then if you want to climb outside you need people to climb with that can lead or hang top ropes as well. I'm so happy to have found a good girl climbing group this summer, and I've been so psyched to write about local opportunities for people looking to get into the climbing community. One local guide service, Mountain Trip, just opened up a series of free clinics, the last of which is this coming Tuesday. However, the guides are hoping to offer more for both rock and ice climber. Another great spot to find climbing community is the Rec Center, which hosts Women on the Wall events weekly that can actuallly draw crowd. So, if you're looking t try climbing and not sure where to start, there's a few ideas to get you going! Cheers, Kylea QUICK LINKS |
