Good evening and hello! It's Opening Day! Since my San Francisco Giants don't play until tomorrow, their first home opener in years, I'll be watching reigning AL MVP Shohei Ohtani tonight throw 100 miles per hour and hit 450-foot moonshots. Which brings me to some trivia: before Ohtani accomplished the feat during a historic 2021 season, who was the last player to take the mound as the starting pitcher while leading MLB in home runs? Send you answers to josuep@montrosepress.com!
Extending 6700 road The agreement allows the city to purchase the rights of way and easements at a cost of $291,300 to complete Sunnyside Road and Miami Road with a minor arterial. If approved, it will jumpstart a roughly $3.5 million project with a road template similar to the South Hillcrest Extension. The majority of the cost would be covered by the city's general fund, with the water and sewer fund covering utility work. The project would be an effort to lessen the traffic load on Townsend and Hillcrest. And with housing developments east of town planned, and some underway, it makes sense, from the city's view, to address impending increased traffic ahead of time. I drove on Townsend earlier this week and traffic, while not at metro levels, is prominent. It seems to have grown slightly each year. It's definitely different than it was when I was attending MHS, so I understand the city's reasoning. Construction on the project would start in 2023. I posted about the potential project on NABUR, where several community members have shared their thoughts.
Montrose girls soccer nearly topped Fruita Montrose High School girls soccer hasn't defeated Fruita since April 30, 2015. I'd call that a mini-drought, but last season's 5-0 and 6-0 losses to Fruita adds to it. That drought nearly came to an end Tuesday. Montrose, outside of a defensive error in the second half, was neck-and-neck with Fruita. The girls had a few chances, but nothing materialized. The near win has the program believing its closing the gap against their league rival. That's no surprise. The talent has taken a step forward under head coach Cassie Snyder and captains Natalie Hernandez, Josie Coulter and Rachel Robuck have taken MHS's mantra (LEAD from the front) to heart. It will be interesting to see how the rest of league play shakes out. Fruita and Durango are both talented. But Montrose is playing with confidence, and perhaps most importantly, together. I'll be at the MHS tennis courts and football field on Saturday to cover tennis and boys lacrosse. See you there!
