'Not again' has become 'once again' Welcome to Monday, Montrose.
Unfortunately, the news is not good. Just one week ago, you were reading about the murders of three football players at the University of Virginia.
Over the weekend, you likely heard about violence much closer to home: 5 shot dead in a Colorado Springs nightclub, with scores more injured.
The state on Saturday lost Derrick Rump, Daniel Aston, Ashley Paugh, Kelly Loving and Raymond Green, who were at Club Q. Most of the victims were celebrating with family and friends; another was just there to see a show.
You can learn more about these five innocent people who are not coming home for Thanksgiving or any other holiday here.
I do not purport to have the solution to preventing this kind of violence. I am, however, fed up. I am fed up with various entitled, aggrieved, selfish people deciding to take their frustrations out on others — people they don't even know, let alone have a legitimate issue with.
What is it, I wonder, that people who carry out mass shootings are trying to prove? They are not martyrs. They are not striking a blow for justice, or whatever cause exists in their angry brains. They are committing murder.
This is Katharhynn from the newsroom, asking you to hold your loved ones a little closer — and also, in remembering the loved ones of others, choose kindness.
Are you ready? Kevin Kuns, Holly Padilla, and a whole host of other folks who are part of Montrose Community Dinners' annual community Thanksgiving feast sure are! I stopped by Friendship Hall today, to see how things were going. Just about 10 days ago, they were struggling a little to find enough volunteers for the feeding of more than 2,000 people. How many were they down? 165! But by Monday, they had filled all but a few slots and were in good shape, Kevin said, as volunteers buzzed about, deboning roasted turkeys. The meal is a go, yet again! And it is, as always, thanks to volunteers who care about their friends and neighbors. Hope to see you there! Oh, and speaking of Thanksgiving: There will not be a Thursday paper. We at the Daily Press wish you and yours the best! (Kevin Kuns demonstrates deboning techniques to volunteers on Monday)
