Where did the time go?! Yes, I find myself asking that question every time I look in the mirror, or see photos of my Grand Junction bestie's grandson (grandson? How did that happen — we were just in kindergarten, eating paper clocks together!) But I also find myself asking it in a different context, as it hits me the changes 20 years can bring. Twenty years ago, the effort to bring child advocacy center philosophies to bear on the child abuse problem here was just coming to fruition. As I spoke to Kay Alexander, Mary Vader, Michelle Gottlieb and others about The Dolphin House Child Advocacy Center for an anniversary piece, it hit me. Twenty years ago, we didn't yet have some of the services we now take for granted. That made me all the more grateful for the center — and I can only imagine how grateful little kids are to have someplace safe to tell what happened to them after experiencing trauma that no one ever should. So, I wanted to say thank you to The Dolphin House, the people who made it possible, and the people who continue to keep the doors open by volunteering, by donating, by being a service provider, or employed by one of the agencies that helps the child victims of abuse and family members navigate the unimaginable. The hope, of course, is that 20 years from now, we no longer need child advocacy centers, because people have stopped harming children. Regrettably, that isn't likely. In the meantime, though, thank you, again, to everyone who works to help children. Want to learn more? Want to help too? Here are details. Katharhynn, from the Newsroom.
