Get back in the backcountry safely

My sister lived in New Orleans for years
And just yesterday, as we were chatting on the phone, she told me her friends had just informed her that her favorite swamp walking trail was actually notoriously sketchy place.

It's a pretty, well-maintained trail too. As far as swamps go, it definitely didn't seem like the kind of place where things go down.

But, it got us laughing and talking about how we tend to assume the mere existance of a trail suggests a place is somewhat safe. Almost like, if enough people have been here before, it can't be too dangerous.

Of course, living here, we know that isn't true. At all. Front or backcountry, trail or no trail, we're never totally safe on our adventures.

But, we can make ourselves as safe as possible.

Over the next few weeks, three safety talks in Montrose and Ouray will highlight basic hiking safety tips, and they're all free to the public. We'll have more details in this week's Outdoors section, so stay tuned and stay safe!

Cheers,
Kylea from the newsroom
