Fair time! Once again, Montrose County is turning out to honor and recognize our No. 1 economic driver: agriculture!
The Montrose County Fair and Rodeo got underway with a parade July 17 and continues all this week. Tuesday was Community Night, replete with food, fun, a tug-o-war game, tractor pulls and mutton bustin'! It was honestly impressive to see those determined kids hold onto the backs of sheep as the animals raced across the turf.
If you missed Community Night, don't fret. There's a lot more to do and see at the fair — and it's the 140th year, meaning the fair is only 10 years younger than our state! Head on down to the fairgrounds (1001 N. Second St./North Seventh and the bypass) when you get a chance.

Fire updates The Gold Mountain and Elk fires continue to burn, and a new start, the Sawmill Fire prompted partial closure of the Upper Roubideau Tract of the Escalante State Wildlife Area in Montrose County, near the Uncompahgre National Forest boundary. The Sawmill Fire was about 6 acres Tuesday night. For the Gold Mountain Fire, the Montrose County, the sheriff has downgraded Zone 34 to “prepare to evacuate” status. This includes the area south of the P77 Road/Cimarron Road intersection and properties on P77 Road approximately one mile north of the intersection. While recent weather has been favorable, the fire remains active and the situation can change rapidly. Residents in Zone 34 should remain prepared to evacuate at a moment's notice if needed and continue to monitor official updates. The Gold Mountain Fire has been burning since June 27, when it began 2 miles from Ouray. It’s been measured at 38.044 acres and is 24% contained. Because monsoons have started to arrive, there is now risk of flash flooding, as shown elsewhere in the region by San Miguel County mudslides that on Tuesday again caused Colorado 145 to be shut for a time. More about the fire at the official page, here. The Elk Fire has been burning since July 9 a few miles from Lake City in Hinsdale County. It was at 2,307 acres and 0% containment, according to a Wednesday morning update. Tuesday, crews completed structure protection along Colorado 149 and the primary control line was finished around Lake City. Drivers are reminded to drop their speed when traveling on CO 149 and County Road 20. The Alpine Loop is open and Cinnamon Pass (CR 30) is open where trails and campgrounds remain open. Closures: The National Forest has implemented an area closure west of Highway 149 and north of County Road 20 in Hinsdale and Gunnison Counties.
