Frustration in court; Montrose welcomes Colorado Day

The saddle of a missing - and missed - man If you've been around Montrose for any length of time, you've probably heard the name Ben Gray. He has been missing since 1978, was declared dead in 1981, and remains the town's coldest missing person case.  His children remember a father and a mentor, and every day, grapple with both loss and uncertainty. I had the honor of speaking with two of them, as well as a Texas man who found one of Ben Gray's trophy saddles, and is working to bring it back to the family. You can find their story here. On Aug. 1, we mark 150 years as part of the Union, and locally, there are a bevy of events. • A full slate of fun is set for the Ute Indian Museum at Chipeta Road and U.S. 550 — A History Colorado property. There's free admission, self-guided tours, films, and classes for kids and adults. Hours are 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.  • On the far eastern edges of town, Museum of the Mountain West offers two-for-one tickets for guided and self-guided tours. Stroll through and around actual historic buildings carefully moved to the site at 68169 Miami Road, including the Jutten Schoolhouse and the Second Empire house, as well as view more than 150,000 artefacts curated by Richard Fike. Hours are 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. • You can also go right downtown to the historic train depot building at 21 N. Rio Grande to visit the Montrose County Historical Museum for free on Colorado Day; hours are 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.  • Don't overlook Montrose Center for Arts, 205 E. Main, which is hosting rag rug twining, machine quilting and basket making demos (11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. are the respective starting times). The center is free and open to the public 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. • The younger set might enjoy The Montrose Children's Museum at 221 Colorado Ave., Suite A. Discounted admission, self guided tours, and, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., special art classes for the kiddos. Multiple other events are happening in town, including the weekly Farmers' Market at Centennial Plaza, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. and the 443 Market Artisan Fair Festival, a one-day indoor artist and artisan block party at 443 E.
