County marks 140 years of fair; city sets charter meetings

Another loss Another firefighter has died from injuries sustained while battling our area wildfires. The U.S. Department of the Interior announced that Nathan Matthews, 43, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died July 24.  Matthews was assigned to the Rifle Helitack crew and was one of five firefighters who was trapped in a burnover while fighting the Knowles Fire in Mesa County June 27. Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson and Sydney Watson all died at the scene, while Matthews and a fifth firefighter were injured. The Gold Mountain Fire in July claimed firefighting helicopter pilot Nicholas Dale of British Columbia. Matthews' death brings the tragic toll to five lost fighting fires in the region.
