Water worries:
Recent snows notwithstanding, water managers and users know not to expect a robust water year, unless nature shifts gears dramatically.
Snowpack in the Gunnison Basin would have to hit about 139% of average just to take the basin to normal peak accumulation for the season, according to recent Bureau of Reclamation hydrology reports for the Aspinall Unit of dams and reservoirs.
The National Weather Service further predicts a summer that will be hotter and drier than normal.

Felony theft: Robert "Steve" McEwin has been formally charged in an alleged investment scheme said to have bilked the Montrose County School District out of more than $230,000.
McEwin, now free on bond, was arrested last December and accused of siphoning school district money through false expenditures and misuse of district credit cards. McEwin was further accused of falsely claiming to have a doctorate, which caused the school district to pay him a higher salary.

Thursday Throwback: "The wait is over!" was the headline that ran across the front page of the Montrose Daily Press on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017.
Hundreds of people in the community had come to check out the grand opening of the Montrose Community Rec Center Friday night and enjoyed all the amenities the facility had to offer.
From the wibit aquatrack in the competition pool to the beach balls that families waded through in the recreation areas, the Rec Center was the place to be Friday.
With the long awaited grand opening finally happening, the community expressed excitement about the facility exceeding their expectations.
