It's May, right? You couldn't prove it by the wind, which is blowing like it's March — in like a lion. Montrose recorded a wind gust of 59 mph Sunday, National Weather Service meteorologist Lucas Boyer told me. The simple explanation: a jet stream that is parked over us and largely staying put. A jet stream, formed from temperature differentials between warm and colder air masses, usually tends to behave like an actual stream — a current of ebbs and flows. Instead, this jet stream is "locked over us" and we're stuck in a pattern that is expected to remain into Thursday. The winds are expected to be calmer Friday, based on current models. 'Bout time, is all I can say. Lucas is right: this current situation is like another day on the calendar that we've long since passed: "a bit of a Groundhog Day." Shout-out to young artists Montrose High School has talent in spades. Students took on the challenge when asked to design a new logo for the school's new mascot, the Red Hawks. Andrew Jutten, a junior, won first place in the contest, incorporating the red hawk with wings rising like mountain peaks. Second place went to Hayley Eldridge, a sophomore. In all, more than 90 students stepped up to offer a logo design. Good job to all, and congrats to Andrew and Hayley! Read about it here
