Good evening and hello!
Two 30-year-old records (30 years!) were broken by members of Montrose High School's track and field team.
Isaac Renfrow, Amaris Mora, Junior Rodriguez and Austin Zimmer ran a 42.63 at the Olathe Invitational in the 4x100 relay last Thursday, breaking the school record by .57 tenths of a second.
They broke their own record two days later at the Tiger Invitational with a 42.58.
Alonzo Leiba runs instead of Zimmer alongside Renfrow, Mora and Rodriguez in the 4x200, and they broke the school record there, too, running a 1:29.51. The previous record was held by Mike Simmons, Jeff Longmore, Jacob Sifagus and former NFL punter Dirk Johnson.
Here, from left to right, is Mora, Renfrow, Johnson, Zimmer, Rodriguez and Leiba before the team traveled to the state meet on Wednesday.
A few more records were broken, so look for this Saturday's sports section to read the full story.
On a final note: Current MHS track and field head coach Brian Simpson saw Johnson and his teammates break the school record in 1992 when he was in his first official season as an assistant coach.
"How can you not be excited for them to break something that is so old," Simpson said. "In 1992, I watched all of those young men set the school record and here we are 30 years later and I get to witness that again. There is nothing more than a lot of happiness and joy for those young men."

CCIA greenlights Red Hawks The Colorado Commission of Indian Affairs voted today to remove Montrose High School from the list of schools that violate the state's Native American mascot law. The CCIA's action ends a near year-long saga for Montrose County School District, which first learned it would have to remove its MHS and Centennial Middle School mascots in June 2021. There were committees, discussions, public rhetoric in favor and in opposition of the change and everything else in between throughout the year. But MCSD will be relieved of the possibly of being slapped with a $25,000 fine and can, once renovations are complete, calmly usher in a new era this fall.
Hospital grades? The independent quality agency The LeapFrog Group released safety grades for a pair of local hospitals. Montrose Regional Health received a C. Delta Health was assigned a B. My colleague Cassie Knust spoke with MRH CEO Jeff Mengenhausen who offered reasoning for the mid-tier rating. MRH has not submitted data since 2016, which affected its rating, but is discussing how to improve its reports to the agency. Delta Health dropped from an A rating last year. The recent drop is not because of the survey, however. You can read more information on the grades for MRH and Delta Health here. Have a good evening!
