Stomp on cancer
Has cancer affected your family? If so, you're not alone: According to the American Cancer Society, almost 2 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed this year and more than 609,000 Americans will die because of cancer.

Cancer did not spare my father, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2009. He died May 22, 2010 and Sunday was the 12-year mark. I spent part of the day walking about in nature as my unofficial, low-key "memorial hike" for him.

The best way to honor someone cancer has taken is to try to prevent it from taking others. The San Juan Cancer Center stands at the forefront locally, with treatment, and the San Juan Health Care Foundation works to raise funds for the center's patients.

You can do your part by attending the annual Boot Stomp fundraiser, June 3, 5:30 - 10:30 p.m. at Storm King Mountain Ranch. Get your cowboy boots on and prepare to dance the night away! Tickets can be purchased at www.bootstompmontrose.com

If you can't make it, you can always make a direct donation to San Juan Healthcare Foundation (sanjuanhf.org), Bosom Buddies of Southwest Colorado (breast cancer), or any cancer charity, at any time. All are worthy.

A nationwide charity, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (pancan.org), specifically raises money to improve research into this particular cancer, in hopes that a means of early diagnosis is developed. My father was already Stage IV when he was diagnosed — the fate of many who develop pancreatic cancer. We were blessed to have him eight more months. Rest in peace, Dad.

Simms Fire brief update

The Simms Fire is reported at 90% containment. It burned three structures, including one residential home. All evacuation orders have been lifted. Check www.montrosepress.com for the next story.

A note about the fire fundraiser

Earlier this month, we published an article containing information about the benefit account for Keith Dowell, who was badly burned in the Hartman Bros. fire in April.

NuVista Credit Union wants people to know that when they write a check for the account, it needs to be made out to "Keith Dowell."

So: To donate directly to Dowell's NuVista benefit account, mail a check made out to "Keith Dowell" and put "benefit" or "donation" in the memo line, or stop by NuVista at 2711 Commercial Way, Montrose, and inform the teller you are donating to Keith Dowell. Bank information at 970-249-8813, option 4.

My apologies for the lack of clarity in the original article.
