Good evening, Montrose! There's something in the air, and it's not wildfire smoke (yet): a few weeks of school remain on the calendar and summer is about to start.
I'm really excited to go on some more hiking and camping trips in these next few months. What are you looking forward to this summer? Do you have any fun trips planned or are you going to get some R&R in-town? Hit reply on this email and let me know!
School board approved asbestos settlement: Tuesday's school board meeting was super eventful. In addition to changing the rules for health education to require parental consent, they approved a $815,000 settlement for a roofing lawsuit.
This lawsuit, which was first filed last summer, alleges that contractors improperly handled asbestos-containing materials while working on the roofs at Centennial and Olathe Middle Schools.
I didn't get any comments from MCSD officials, but the legal documents gave me more than enough information to get a clear picture of what allegedly went down.
The contractors knew that they were responsible for proper asbestos abatement, but an inspector on an unrelated project found asbestos-laced roofing debris a few months after the roofing construction ended.
While reporting this story, I learned that asbestos isn't much of a risk to human health when it's handled properly, but can cause long-term health issues when disturbed.
MCSD spent well over $1 million in the immediate aftermath of the asbestos clean-up, but the settlement was only for $815,000. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall when that was being negotiated!
Cool space news: In case you missed it, some really cool astronomical news came out yesterday.
Astronomers have taken the first photo of the black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy. The gravity of black holes is so strong that space, time and light get bent and distorted.
Black holes are known to suck in matter from around them, but this one is not super violent, according to astronomers cited in the AP: "it's the equivalent to a person eating a single grain of rice over millions of years."
The first image of a black hole was also released by the same telescope group in 2019. Far out!
There's a new bakery in town: The Montrose location of Crumbl Cookies is opening today on the southern edge of town in the River Landing shopping center. I've been to the location in Grand Junction and was impressed with the quality of the cookie. They're kind of pricey, but I thought it was worth it. I'll be heading there after I'm all done with work. That's what I like to call a sweet way to start the weekend!
