Monday purrs to you all!

OK, so I'm a day late, but as a certified cat lady it is never too late to drop a plug for kittens!

Yesterday, July 10, was National Kitten Day, and I can't resist celebrating the fuzzy devils with their little razored paws. As a colleague at my last job once said "All baby animals are cute, but there's nothing cuter than a kitten."

Kittens, of course, become cats, so a kitten is a lifetime commitment. My own fuzz-demon, shown below, was adopted as a tiny kitten from Montrose Animal Shelter in 2008! She is now 14, and for a kitty with a bad knee, she is spry.

I wouldn't trade her for anything, and millions of others feel the same way about their pets: there are 95.6 million owned cats (or more accurately, humans owned by cats), according to the American Humane Society, and 83.3 million households with at least one dog.

Why not join those households? Add your first cat and/or dog — or add to the pack!

The Montrose Animal Shelter, had 16 beautiful cats and kittens up for adoption as of Monday. Down the road, Second Chance Humane Society had about 20 listed.

As for me, I love and want them all; it's just that life circumstances (and the aforementioned fuzz-demon) preclude it. I have a special fondness for solid gray cats; longhaired gray tabbies (tabby is a coat pattern, not a breed, by the way) and slinky black cats, which look just like mini panthers.

Check out the rescues and find your match!

If you can't adopt, consider volunteering or donating to the shelter, Second Chance, or any other number of animal rescues in the area.

Good luck, Josue!
Last week, Josue Perez shared with you all that he is leaving the Daily Press. Today is his last day, and I just can't let him go without a shout-out.

Thank you, Josue, for all of your hard work and excellent reporting. I will miss you, but am happy for your next venture. Go get 'em!
