Hi and hello! It's Cassie here with your newsletter. It's been a little while since we've connected, so it's good to be back! I've been floating between our sister community paper, the Delta County Independent, and it's been a privilege to be able to get to know my home and the surrounding areas better.
As we head into the weekend, remember to drink lots of water and dress for the weather if you go out for July 4th celebrations. We're looking at high chances of rain through Sunday, so fingers crossed it won't dampen any fireworks!
Be sure to share your weekend celebrations with us so we can share them with the community!
Montrose is prepping the weekend celebrations The city's annual July 4th parade will begin at 10 a.m. as multiple floats and civic groups will march west along Montrose's historic Main Street from Pythian Ave to Rio Grande Ave. Montrose is still planning its annual fireworks spectacular, to be launched as usual from atop Sunset Mesa (where there is little vegetation and not much to burn), pending wind and other conditions. That's at dusk on Independence Day. Multiple other towns in the region are also still planning fireworks, which you can read about here. At 4 p.m. July 4, head to Cerise Park (Rotary Amphitheater), where a beer garden will serve the 21 and older crowd, and a food truck village will be selling plenty of fare. Get your spot early for the 5 p.m. concert by the Falconaires Air Force Academy Band. Girl Named Tom, the winner of The Voice competition in 2021, takes the stage at 7:30 p.m.
2022 Primary Election: Boebert wins; Coram concedes following landslide results MDP publisher Dennis Anderson snapped this photo of Don Coram during his concession speech Tuesday evening. First returns from Montrose County — with Olathe and the West End pending as of press deadline — showed Coram with 3,092 votes to Boebert's 5,300. "We didn't get the results that we were looking for," Coram said at the watch party, "but we're holding our head high. I came into this race saying that honesty, integrity and civility are important... but the voters have chosen and we respect their voice."
Chipeta traffic signal is headed to bid The long-awaited traffic signal at U.S. 550 and Chipeta Road (as seen above) recently won design approval from the Colorado Department of Transportation. Now, the project is to be put out for bid, with the goal of completion in time for the summer 2023 travel season. Montrose County and the City of Montrose, both stakeholders in the intersection, entered an intergovernmental agreement last year, agreeing to a 60-40% cost-share and a cap of $2 million for the signalization project. "Since then, we went full steam ahead," City Engineer Scott Murphy said on Thursday. The county and city will build the project, which CDOT will then operate. Have a great, safe and relaxing weekend! ☀️
