Papal apology Monday news: Pope Francis is on an apology tour, to the First Nations people in Canada. Monday, the pontiff acknowledged the Church's role in Canada's "catastrophic" residential schools, to which First Nation children were forcibly taken and there, stripped of their language and culture. Many also were abused, even killed. Francis is visiting Cree Nations to pray and apologize. I cannot speak for the Cree Nations, but I can say I am appalled by the abuses and cultural genocide perpetrated, not just in Canada, but in the United States, and by more institutions than the Church. This is a lesson to always remember that other people are, in fact, people.
