Thank you for the responses yesterday.

In case you missed my newsletter yesterday, I spoke of the increasing housing crisis here in Montrose County and I'm still sifting through the many responses you've offered. I wanted to share a few today.

"If the intention was to provide affordable housing, Basecamp apartments missed the mark. Basecamp has not helped the people who need it most... What is needed are apartments where the rent is based on your income. If people can't afford to live here, then they can't afford to work here because of the high cost of gasoline for commuting. If we don't fix the problem, Montrose will grow into one more community that cannot house the people who serve us and meet our everyday needs." - Barbara Ward

"Housing costs are ridiculous and unaffordable for families on low or fixed income. A couple on social security combined income is maybe $3,000 monthly. Impossible to pay current market prices for rent plus fuel, etc." - Christine Tyler

"
I have always worked and provided for myself. I am a Montrose resident who is being hit hard with trying to find a place to live. There are very few options for me. Being a single mother with one income and looking to improve my credit is hard. Add into the times we are living in... I as a single mom make well above the minimum wage. I make 21 an hour. I make too much to get any assistance. A house I was looking at in my price range, compared to my income would be a house at $150,000. Well, there are very few. A few I did look at were old and falling apart. I would not qualify for a loan the house was so bad. And with people raising rent, there is no way i can afford anything." - Anonymous

Thank you all for sharing your experiences and underscoring the need in this community. My inbox is open to anyone who is interested in sharing (and being quoted) their experiences as we report on the housing issues in our community.

Keep an eye out as well for an upcoming story on one of our local mobile home communities. Ikies residents have been trying to buy their park after the owner notified them of his intention to sell. Unfortunately, residents are experiencing setbacks in this endeavor and are currently seeking a lender who will help them through the buying process.

As always, you can reach me at cassiek@montrosepress.com

Have a great weekend, friends!

Cassie
