The good go too soon I started out today learning very sad news.
Larry Fredericksen, one of the founders of Haven House Transitional Living Center in Olathe, has passed away. His wife, in her grief, still let people know, and we will soon publish a feature about this remarkable, giving spirit.
Haven House grew out of talk several years ago concerning the dearth of resources for homeless people. Carolyn Carter, Larry and wife Lil, were among the primary drivers getting Haven House established. The program offers shelter for up to 18 months — but also, support programs specific to each family that are designed to help them break the cycle or habits that put them into homelessness.
It is an amazing program, and I will miss this amazing man. As people told me, the loss is to the community, too. Rest in peace, Larry. If you would like to honor Larry, consider making a donation to Haven House (havenhousehomeless.org). Or volunteer there, or any other charity, nonprofit or organization of your choosing.
Larry's services are at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Daniel's in Ouray.

Forever honored
Volunteers and veterans organizations have done it again. Saturday, they came to Camelot Gardens to make wreaths, then paraded to local cemeteries to solemnly lay those green boughs on veterans' graves.
Our freelance photog, Gunnison Clamp, captured the activity:

Be storm-ready Yep — it's December in the Rocky Mountains. Through mid-week, snow expected to hit the higher elevations and even make things dicey down here in the valley, travel-wise. CDOT is reminding all motorists to be aware of heavy snowfall predicted for the mountains all around us, from Monarch Pass to Molas and Wolf Creek, and to plan your trip according. Visit cotrip.org for updated road conditions. Avoid travel if you can; carry supplies, warm clothing, water and snow chains if you truly have to go. And don't be afraid to pull over. About four years ago, I tried Monarch, undeterred by the 6 inches of snow standing on the pass. In a Hyundai Accent. This, shall we say, was a bad decision. Thanks to others on the road, I made it safely to Gunnison, but don't be like me — avoid getting in a bind in the first place.
