Always a treat

I'm talking about the Montrose Community Dinners' annual, free, Thanksgiving meal served up last Thursday.  Not to harp on it, but it truly is an amazing undertaking, this year by 360 or so people, and sponsors. There were 1,200 home deliveries alone this year, and that's not counting the people who showed up to have a sit-down meal, or pick one up.

The treat, for me, isn't the turkey and the pie — well, not only the turkey and the pie. It's talking to people. This slice of the community is full of interesting folks; someone new every year. Last year, for instance, I met a stuntwoman. This year, I met a retired NFL team photographer, who was also a volunteer. Brand-new to town, and there he was; sleeves metaphorically rolled up, and green apron on. I also met a retired school teacher, and a retail store worker who was a fellow reporter!

In all, this was one holiday I absolutely do not mind working on! And, good news if you wanted to help out Montrose Community Dinners. Those folks will be taking over the Christmas meals traditionally delivered to shut-ins and similarly situated older adults this year. Board members stress that this is not a sit-down meal, and is nowhere near the scale of the community-wide Thanksgiving meal, but they thought it was important to carry forward the legacy of Norm and Lexy Stevenson, who for many years delivered those meals. You can help out by visiting montrosecommunitydinners.com to learn how to donate to the cause.

— Katharhynn, from the Newsroom, hoping what is left of your Monday is happy.
