Pay to play?

Mountain bikers and other trail users have an ever-expanding array of trail systems to explore along this stretch of the Western Slope. There's Buzzard Gulch, as well as the much-celebrated Electric Hills in Montrose, and the RAT down in Ridgway.

As of now, these trails — on BLM land, but maintained by volunteers with nonprofit trail groups — are free to use, but that could soon change, with the Bureau of Land Management's Uncompahgre Field Office currently considering imposing fees to use the trails, as well as in some campgrounds. The money collected would be used to implement upgrades at the various sites.
