Lower, but never zero ...

.... the chances of your electric water heater catching fire. I found that out last Wednesday night, but, thanks to my perceptive neighbor, the Montrose Fire Protection District, and the very responsive landlords/their plumber, I did not have to find out by an actual house fire, or by going days without hot water.

About 11 at night, I began to smell the telltale scent of burning plastic. I looked all over, but could not find the source, until my neighbor arrived, thought she smelled the burning odor strongest outside of the closet where the water heater was, and we checked. It was singed black around the front panel. We called dispatch, crated two oddly compliant felines, and left the home.

The fire district sent two people, who quickly located the problem, switched off the breaker, and removed burnt insulation to reveal fried wires. They checked for other heat sources, and had things right as rain swiftly — 24 minutes from the time I called to them clearing the scene, say the reports — and then even returned to give me a new smoke detector.

The next day, the landlord and plumber worked me into their planned maintenance schedule and installed a brand new water heater. In all, I was left without hot water for less than 24 hours — and most of all, a place to still call home. To say I am grateful is an understatement. Thank you, Montrose Fire Protection District, and everyone who helped me out, through deed or good word!

Does your older adult need a Christmas meal?

Montrose Community Dinners has taken over the Christmas Day meal formerly delivered by community stalwarts Norm and Lexy Stevenson. It's been rebranded as Montrose Holiday Meals, but works the same as the former Montrose Christmas Meals: Older, homebound adults and residents of senior living centers can call or go online (or have someone help them) to reserve a meal that volunteers will deliver on Christmas Day.

Call 970-318-6759 or visit montrosecommunitydinners.com — and do it before noon on Tuesday, Dec. 24.

This is for a specific, targeted population, and is delivery-only, so it is different than the annual Thanksgiving meal that concluded a few weeks back. If you don't need a meal, but have the time to deliver one, check out the website above and click the "volunteer" button. You can also click the "donate" button, if you're so inclined, and thank you in advance!
