Is liquor coming to City Market?

Some Montrose residents hope not. But, it will be up to 30 days until we know for sure.

On Tuesday, the Montrose City Council heard out City Market representatives applying for a liquor license that would allow the chain to sell spirits and more at its southern location.

Representatives believed they met the state-required standards for a liquor license- and that there aren't a whole lot of legal reasons the council can turn them down.

Local residents and business owners disagree. While the council can't legally consider reasons of business competition or the impacts on local businesses, opponents of the license attacked the demand for the store, character of the chain and safety of allowing people to buy liquor through a self checkout.

We'll have more on the issue in the coming weeks, including a rundown of the meeting in Saturday's paper.

One thing is clear: whether or not the license is approved, local liquor stores are still here for the community, and could use some local love.

Cheers,

Kylea from the newsroom

But that could soon change in some locations like Buzzard Gulch and the RAT systems.
